$6.5 Million Double Eagles Set, “Hot Lips” Morgan $1, PNG Seminar at May 2008 Long Beach Expo

(Long Beach, California) – Exhibits of a $6.5 million collection of Liberty Head $20 gold coins and a one-of-a-kind grading set of the unusual “Hot Lips” variety Morgan silver dollars will highlight the next Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo, May 29 – 31, 2008. The Professional Numismatists Guild will conduct another in its recently-launched “Share the Knowledge” free public seminars at the show in the Long Beach, California Convention Center, 100 S. Pine Ave.
“Monaco Rare Coins of Newport Beach, California will exhibit a recently acquired, virtually complete 150-coin date and mintmark collection of Types I, II and III Liberty Head Double Eagles from 1850 to 1907,” said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.
Assembled during the past 20 years by a collector who wants to remain anonymous and valued today at $6.5 million, the “Monaco Collection” set contains one of the three known 1861-P Paquet Reverse specimens (graded PCGS MS-61), and is missing only the 1883 proof-only Liberty $20. The exhibit in Long Beach will be the first time the set has been publicly displayed.
Professional Coin Grading Service will display a complete 21-coin set of the curious 1888-O Hot Lips (VAM-4) variety Morgan dollars in every known grade from Poor-1 to Mint State-61. The variety is nicknamed Hot Lips because of significant doubling of Miss Liberty’s lips, nose and chin. The grading set was assembled by Greensboro, North Carolina dealer, Ash Harrison, President of the Society of Silver Dollar Collectors.
A timely seminar, “Precious Metals Markets,” will be presented by PNG member-dealer Richard Nachbar of Williamsville, New York at Noon on Friday, May 30. Nachbar predicts gold and silver prices are “undoubtedly going higher.” A complimentary light lunch will be available for audience members at the Share the Knowledge seminar. A half dozen other seminars and club meetings also will be conducted during the three-day show.

Heritage Auction Galleries (www.HA.com) of Dallas, Texas will conduct a major sale of U.S. and world coins and bank notes.

More than 1,000 dealers will be buying and selling rare coins, paper money, stamps, postcards, historic documents, antiques, estate jewelry and other collectibles. Some dealers will provide free, informal appraisals for visitors. Young numismatists’ activities, including a children’s treasure hunt, will be held on Saturday, May 31. A free gold coin door prize will be awarded each day to a lucky, registered visitor.
The public hours are Thursday and Friday, May 29 and 30, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 6 pm. (The show is closed on Sunday.) A complete Schedule of Events is online at www.LongBeachShow.com.
