This presentation will discuss the theft of a train known as “The General” and the epic chase by the conductor and its sister engine “The Texas.” The collecting of Western and Atlantic train fare notes and the varieties of those notes has become a popular niche collecting interest since topic expert Dennis Schaufluetzel published an article cataloging the notes in Paper Money magazine a few years ago. Many of these notes are rare, and some unique. Phillips accompanies his discussion with a display of a complete series and denomination set of all issued notes, including a unique note.

Money of the Afterlife: A Fascinating Discussion on Banknotes

This presentation takes a look at the history, lore, issuance and use of collecting banknotes for use in the afterlife – a small, specialized field of paper money collecting. These colorful, ornate death notes of various sizes were burned at the gravesite and in other ceremonies to honor ancestors and have a mythological history of use in China dating back hundreds of years. Individuals will learn about their naming, figures and symbols seen on these notes, and uses in traditional rituals such as Qing Ming – The Festival of Pure Brightness and the Hungry Ghost Festival. *Mature topic matter may be discussed.
