Secrets, Mistakes on Paper Money, Gold Rush Exhibits Highlight May – June Long Beach Expo

(Long Beach, California) – A special “funny money” display entitled, “Looking for Secrets and Mistakes on Currency,” and a multi-million dollar exhibit of Gold Rush era coins will be featured at the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo in the Long Beach, California Convention Center, 100 S. Pine Ave., May 31 – June 2, 2007. The three-day show is open to the public.
“The display will showcase examples of paper money from Colonial times to the present with mistakes or hidden features,” said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.
“One of the exhibit’s fascinating items is a five-cent denomination fractional currency note issued during the Civil War in 1864 with the wrong portrait. It was supposed to honor William Clark of the famous Lewis & Clark Expedition, but instead Spencer Clark, a Treasury Department official, put his own portrait on the note! That led to a federal law prohibiting the appearance of any living person on our paper money,” Gillio explained.
The exhibit will be displayed courtesy of Stack’s of New York City and Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.
As part of a Gold Rush era exhibit, Monaco Rare Coin of Newport Beach, California will display the John Glover Kellogg specimen 1852/1 $20 gold “ingot” (PCGS PR-65) struck in San Francisco by Augustus Humbert of the San Francisco U.S. Assay Office. The exhibit will also feature one of the two known specimens of 1861 Philadelphia Mint “Paquet Reverse” Double Eagle (PCGS MS-61) that Monaco purchased for $1.6 million at a public auction last year.
More than 1,000 dealers will be buying and selling coins, paper money, stamps, antique jewelry and historical documents. A dozen educational, hobby seminars will be conducted during the show, including tips from eBay about online buying and selling of collectibles at Noon, Friday, June 1.
A children’s treasure hunt will be held Saturday; the Long Beach Stamp Club will give away free collectible stamps to youngsters; and a free gold coin door prize will be awarded each day to a lucky visitor to the show.

Heritage Auction Galleries (www.HA.com) of Dallas, Texas will conduct a major sale of U.S. and world coins and bank notes.

The public hours are Thursday and Friday, May 31 and June 1, 2007, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday, June 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (The show is closed on Sunday.) A complete Schedule of Events can be found online at www.LongBeachShow.com.
